For IT Managers, CIOs, CTOs & Connectivity Directors
This FAQ covers the architecture, functionality, and management of NowhereConnect Suite™, Nowhere Networks’ onboard connectivity solution built for maritime operations with complex user and network demands.
What is NowhereConnect Suite™?
NowhereConnect Suite™ is a hybrid onboard connectivity platform combining a Captive Portal Infrastructure and an onboard Dynamic Connectivity Gateway (DCG). It supports multiple network types, enables smart traffic control, and allows operators to manage differentiated services for passengers, crew, and ship systems.
What types of backhaul connectivity does it support?
The platform is designed to manage and optimize traffic across:
• Land-based radio (Nowhere Networks coastal broadband)
• LEO satellite (e.g., Starlink)
• GEO satellite
• LTE/5G mobile networks
The DCG selects the optimal link in real time based on bandwidth, latency, and network conditions.
What is the Dynamic Connectivity Gateway (DCG)?
The DCG is the onboard hardware device responsible for routing, prioritizing, and shaping network traffic. It sits between the vessel’s local networks and the available external connections, functioning as a smart router with traffic awareness.
What’s inside the DCG?
It includes two main subsystems:
• Wireless Access Gateway (WAG): Manages authentication, time/data quotas, and redirects unauthenticated users to the portal.
• Traffic Management Engine (TME): Performs deep packet inspection, identifies traffic types, and enforces policies based on bandwidth availability and service priorities.
How does the Traffic Management Engine work?
The TME analyzes real-time traffic and classifies it by application or service. It enables:
• Bandwidth shaping per service and per user
• Prioritization of critical traffic (e.g., operational comms, IoT)
• Dynamic reallocation of bandwidth based on current network performance
• Restrictions or throttling of non-essential traffic during congestion
What network topologies are supported?
The system supports:
• VLAN-based segmentation
• Multiple SSIDs for different user types
• Integration with SD-WAN setups
• Logical access point grouping for zone-specific service policies
Can it integrate with our existing systems?
Yes. The platform integrates with:
• Crew authentication (e.g., login credentials or user directories)
• Booking and loyalty systems
• Payment providers (currently NETS, with Adyen integration available)
• Content management systems (CMS) for ads or onboard content
All integrations are centralized via Nowhere Networks’ cloud environment, so changes apply fleet-wide.
Is the solution compatible with third-party Wi-Fi hardware?
Yes. NowhereConnect is vendor-agnostic and can work with standard Wi-Fi infrastructure. Access points can be grouped for service differentiation based on location (e.g., public areas vs. cabins).
How is the system managed?
The solution is managed via a centralized cloud platform. This enables:
• Real-time monitoring and reporting
• Policy updates across vessels
• Centralized voucher and service management
• Integration with logging and analytics systems
What about cybersecurity?
Security is handled through:
• Encrypted cloud communication
• Role-based access control
• User and device logging
• Segmentation of traffic and services
• Support for integration with existing cybersecurity frameworks
Can we control bandwidth per group or application?
Yes. Policies can be defined to control:
• User group access (passenger, crew, IoT)
• Service-specific traffic (e.g., streaming, messaging, VoIP)
• Location-specific behavior (e.g., cabins vs. lounges)
• Dynamic prioritization based on network conditions
What does deployment involve?
Installation of the DCG onboard is minimal. Once connected, it automatically syncs with the cloud controller. Portal design, policy setup, and integration work are handled in collaboration with Nowhere Networks. Fleet rollouts can be managed centrally.
How is this different from VSAT-only or LEO-only solutions?
Traditional VSAT or LEO-only systems lack intelligent traffic management and dynamic link selection. NowhereConnect:
• Uses land-based links where available for lower latency and cost
• Dynamically manages multiple connections
• Prioritizes traffic in real time
• Provides a vendor-neutral, scalable architecture
Can you provide technical documentation?
Yes. Architecture diagrams, onboarding guides, and integration specifications are available on request. We’re also happy to schedule technical workshops for deeper planning.
