FAQ: Nowhere Networks’ Onboard Connectivity Solution

FAQ text over ferry at sea.

Everything you need to know about the NowhereConnect Suite™ — how it works, what it offers, and how it can support your onboard connectivity goals.

❓What is NowhereConnect Suite™?

NowhereConnect Suite™ is Nowhere Networks’ onboard connectivity platform designed for vessels such as ferries, cruise ships, and commercial fleets. It enables passenger and crew internet access, manages bandwidth usage intelligently, and supports multiple types of connectivity (land-based, satellite, LTE/5G).

❓What are the main components of the solution?

There are two core elements:

Captive Portal Infrastructure – the user-facing access point for internet services, with support for branding, payments, and multi-language interfaces.

Dynamic Connectivity Gateway (DCG) – the onboard hardware that manages all internet traffic, intelligently selecting and prioritizing connections.

❓How does the Captive Portal work?

The Captive Portal is what passengers and crew see when they connect to onboard Wi-Fi. It’s customizable to match your brand, supports local payment methods, vouchers, and allows users to buy or upgrade their service. The portal can also display ship information and targeted advertising.

❓What connectivity types are supported?

NowhereConnect is designed to work with a combination of:

Land-based broadband

LEO (e.g., Starlink)and GEO satellite

LTE/5G mobile connections

The system dynamically chooses the most effective link based on availability and bandwidth quality.

❓Can the system handle different user types?

Yes. You can create different access profiles for:

• Passengers (free or paid access)

• Crew (with login or voucher access)

• IoT and ship systems

• Loyalty members or event attendees

Each profile can have its own service level, bandwidth limits, and access rules.

❓How is traffic prioritized onboard?

The Traffic Management Engine (TME) classifies and manages data in real time. It distinguishes between services (e.g., Netflix vs. Teams) and adjusts usage based on availability. Critical traffic like operational data or premium user streams can be prioritized over non-essential usage.

❓Is the portal design flexible?

Yes. Unlike template-driven systems, Nowhere Networks handles updates and changes in collaboration with the operator. This allows for greater design flexibility and ensures a consistent experience across your fleet — without adding complexity to your internal processes.

❓What tools are available for advertising and onboard engagement?

Operators can display banner ads, promotions, and announcements directly in the Captive Portal. Upcoming features will allow for scheduled campaigns, where ads or promotions can appear at specific times or locations onboard — supporting retail and event initiatives.

❓Can it integrate with our existing systems?

Yes. The system can be integrated with:

• Booking and loyalty platforms

• Payment providers (current support includes NETS; Adyen integration is in development)

• Content management systems (CMS)

• Logging, analytics, and vessel management tools via the cloud

❓How is the system managed?

Most functions — including logging, analytics, voucher management, and integrations — are centrally managed via Nowhere Networks’ cloud platform. This simplifies operations across a multi-vessel fleet and allows updates or changes to be deployed from a single point.

❓What kind of support and maintenance is included?

The solution includes portal customization hours each month for design or content changes. Additional requests or integrations can be scoped and implemented based on your needs. Nowhere Networks also provides proactive monitoring and support as part of the broader service.

❓Is the solution scalable?

Yes. It’s designed to scale across fleets of any size, with the ability to adapt to new vessels, connectivity types, and evolving service offerings.

❓Who is NowhereConnect Suite™ best suited for?

This solution is ideal for operators who want to:

• Improve onboard Wi-Fi performance

• Offer monetized or tiered connectivity services

• Reduce dependency on costly satellite-only systems

• Enhance passenger experience with branded, digital touchpoints

• Maintain control and visibility over bandwidth usage and costs
