DFDS Expands With Nowhere Networks After a Great First Year

After one year of operational use, DFDS has chosen to expand its deployment of Nowhere Networks’ hybrid connectivity solution. The decision follows positive experiences with the initial rollout across seven freight vessels and multiple European ports.

As of this spring, DFDS is adding five more cargo vessels and three additional ports — the Belgian port of Ghent, the Dutch port of Vlaardingen, and the German port of Cuxhaven — to its Nowhere Networks setup. The extension is a direct result of the reliability, cost efficiency, and operational simplicity delivered by the solution.

Operational Value Driving Expansion

Nowhere Networks’ approach combines land-based radio connectivity with LEO satellite and LTE, all orchestrated through a managed hybrid solution. For cargo operators like DFDS, this means high-capacity bandwidth at a lower cost.

“We’ve seen a noticeable difference in both performance and predictability since switching to Nowhere Networks,” says Jan Alex Svane, IT Communication Manager at DFDS A/S. “The hybrid setup fits our freight operations well, especially as we continue to digitalize both onboard systems and port logistics.”

The decision to expand was driven by practical results. The connectivity has supported crew communication, real-time monitoring, and smoother integration with DFDS’s existing IT infrastructure — all while optimizing bandwidth usage across the fleet.

“It’s a straightforward choice to extend a solution that simply works — and works at a cost level that makes sense for freight shipping,” Svane adds.

Building on Proven Results

DFDS was one of the early adopters of Nowhere Networks’ managed hybrid solution for cargo operations. With over a dozen ships now under coverage and port capacity increasing, the partnership continues to grow in scope.More background can be found in the previously published article: Reliable Connectivity for Cargo Ship Operations.
